A mixture of two of my favorite things, food shows and post-apocalyptic dystopias, “Starve” #1 is a great start to another promising series by writer Brian Wood, who recently wrapped up another post-apocalyptic dystopia series “The Massive”. One of the things I love about Wood as a writer is his ability to get into the details of how a society would actually function in a dystopia, and I would classify him as more of a speculative fiction author more so than just a simple comic book writer. As with “The Massive”, Wood has drawn me into a world that I can’t wait to discover more about.

On the art side, it’s great, with Danijel Zezelj’s heavy lines and Dave Stewart’s moody colors. It’s interesting to note that this is the first time that I’ve ever seen a colorist credited as one of the creators.

Based on this first issue, Wood, Zezelj, and Stewart have hooked me for the (hopefully) long run. It’ll be interesting to see how they handle the cooking aspect of the series, hopefully offering up good recipes for dog! (It would also be interesting if this series was set in the same universe as “The Massive”.)
