I don’t say this lightly: This is one of the best comic book single issues I have ever read. It’s a relatively simple tale about the Silver Surfer trying his hardest to find a new home planet for six billion aliens he had wronged in his previous life as Galactus’s herald, but the tale has a conceptually complex structure and is told in a manner totally unique to the comic book format.

In the hands of lesser creators, this issue would come off as a gimmick, but writer Dan Slott and artist Michael Allred deliver a solid tale with surprising depth and complexity and just knock this issue out of the park. There’s no decompression or fat or gristle in this issue, but rather the creators pack it full of earnestness, sadness, despair, frustration, sacrifice, bravery, redemption, hope, and, most importantly, pure comic book joy.
