I’m not a big fan of decompressionism in comics, or the “writing-for-the-trade” style of writing. I feel like any single comic book issue should be able to stand on its own — to be read and enjoyed on its own — which is why I appreciate series like “S.H.I.E.L.D.” with done-in-one issues, where each issue tells a complete story, and in the case of “S.H.I.E.L.D.”, is drawn by different artist.

Issue 4 of “S.H.I.E.L.D.” is a great done-in-one. Mark Waid provides a fun story that surprisingly has some unanticipated emotional depth, and Chris Sprouse provides his usual crisp, clean, solid art. I wish the TV show on which this series is inspired could be as good as this issue.
